Wholesale Coffee: Cost Per KG

How Much Does Wholesale Coffee Cost Per Kg in the UK?

If you run a café, restaurant, pub, hotel or office, coffee is one of the few products you reorder week after week. So it's natural that price per kilogram is usually the first thing businesses want to understand. The honest answer is that wholesale coffee prices vary more than most people expect, and the cheapest option is rarely the one that protects your margins in the long run.

Here's a straightforward look at what you can expect to pay, and what actually sits behind the number.

The typical price range

As a broad guide, wholesale coffee beans in the UK tend to fall somewhere between £10 and £40+ per kg, depending on quality, origin and the volume you order. Commodity-grade beans sit at the lower end, while specialty-grade coffee which is carefully sourced, freshly roasted and traceable sits higher.

At Hessian Coffee, our range is priced from £120+ per case (6x1kg), and we're always happy to provide a tailored quote based on your weekly volume.

It's worth saying plainly: a very low price per kg almost always means a compromise somewhere, older stock, lower-grade beans, or a blend designed to hide defects rather than showcase flavour.

What actually drives the price

Several factors determine where a coffee sits in that range:

Bean quality and grade. Specialty-grade coffee is scored and selected for flavour, with far fewer defects than commodity coffee. The difference in the cup is significant, and so is the difference in what your customers are willing to pay.

Origin and traceability. Single-origin and ethically sourced coffees typically cost more than anonymous bulk blends, because the supply chain is shorter and growers are paid fairly.

Roast freshness. Freshly roasted beans, roasted to order, deliver a noticeably better cup than mass-roasted stock that may have been sitting in a warehouse for months. Freshness has a real cost, but it's the single biggest factor in customer satisfaction.

Order volume. Larger and more regular orders generally bring the per-kg price down. A growing business can usually negotiate better terms as volumes increase.

Why price per kg isn't the whole story

The smarter question isn't "what's the cheapest coffee per kg?" — it's "what's my true cost per cup, and what does it earn me?"

A premium bean might cost a little more per kilogram, but a well-made flat white sells for £4 and uses only around 18–20g of coffee. The bean cost per drink is small; the reputation of your coffee is enormous. Serving coffee your customers genuinely enjoy drives repeat visits, higher spend and word-of-mouth. None of which appear on a price list.

It's also worth factoring in what's bundled with the beans. A supplier who provides and services your machine, trains your staff and has next day delivery services that a bare price per kg simply doesn't capture.
