Bourbon Select Coffee - El Salvador has become one the most efficient coffee producers in the world.
This came about partly through necessity due to the lack of external finance available to the country. The impact of coffee production in El Salvador is huge. Not only in regard to land tenure, but also in the development of roads and railways. Also included is the integration of indigenous communities into the national economy.
The Monte Sion estate was set up by the Arrutia family in 1906. Run today by Dr Luis Arrutia and his wife. In addition the Arrutia family is still loyal to being able to produce great coffee. Also committed to the social implications that come with coffee making. In 2001, Monte Sion invested in becoming Rainforest Alliance certified. Henceforth growing all its coffee under shade and within the existing ecosystem. It operates with four concepts in mind: the promotion of sustainable coffee growing; being environmentally friendly; improving the life style conditions of its workers and promotion of education and the social environment. Dr Arrutia has officially been recognised by UNICEF for the exemplary way he looks after his workers.
More about Bourbon Coffee
Coffee grown at Monte Sion is the Bourbon Coffee varietal, one of the oldest and purest coffee varieties available. Bourbon matures slowly allowing for more flavour, sweetness and body to develop. The result is an amazingly complex coffee once roasted. It has notes of caramel, butter, toffee, almonds, hazelnut, ripe fruit, maltiness and chocolate. Bright acidity and floral notes. A fully balanced coffee with that is full bodied.
